Coming in from where the previous clip left off, the Iron Giant is now faced with the death of his friend Hogarth. It is interesting to see the reaction of the Iron Giant when he makes the connection with the boy's death and the death of the deer that was shot by the hunters earlier in the cartoon.

I think the reaction of the Iron Giant is a reasonable one given the circumstances. But I also think that the cartoon really addresses some issue with the whole idea of contrasting vengeance with retribution and rehabilitation—something that is heavily debated in the legal system.

In the end, I think the Iron Giant made the right choice. However, I am curious as to why the Iron Giant did not use its own offensive weapons on the final offensive weapon launched against it at the end.

If you have not seen this cartoon, rent it and watch it. It's very good.

If a sequel were to ever be made for this cartoon, I would like to see a future, closer to our modern era, where Hogarth is grown up and a "second wave" attack comes. In this scenario, perhaps the Iron Giant from the Cold War era would somehow come back and have to face off against the Iron Giant of "near future", a slightly more advanced and much deadlier version of the Iron Giant that befriended Hogarth.

I think it would be interesting to stylize the future Iron Giant more in line with the stealth mentality of the Gulf War era and compare them to the raw power/intimidation tactics of the Cold War era. I think it would be very interesting to see what traits of self-sacrifice could come from this kind of struggle too.

  • good times, i remember when i watched this movie when i was a kid.

  • Vin Diesel is Giant's voice. I shat myself when I saw the credits lol.

  • Hogarth probably a pothead now

  • Crap, these tears are going to short out my keyboard.

  • WAAAGH!! DAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKA!!!!

  • @dabestsinger not cool man, i know dicks who are much better than this guy

  • 0:39 NEVER piss off the giant...Mansley learned that lesson the hard way.

  • Hogarth is sending kids the wrong message. Unless there is something wrong with it, a gun can't kill someone unless the trigger is pulled. However I have had one go off when I dropped it. Luckily no one was hurt.

  • Oh God the tears!!!

  • @Headphoneguy92 The defense mechanism wasn't a bug. In a deleted scene, the Giant has a "dream", in which one of his fellow robots is annihilating some poor planet, but thanks to the fall in the beginning, he can't remember his true function.
