  • Same-sex unions ARE marriages: Lakota chief Crazy Horse had one or two male spouse(s) and many other Native American nations also have had what we now call same-sex marriages. Ethnographers have documented this. Some examples: Omahas, Zapotecs, Mohaves, Crow, Hidatsa, Ojibwa, Winnebago, Yuma and Timucua. Other cultures too. In 17th century Fukian Province China, same-sex marriages between gay men seem to have been common. And in West Africa, "woman marriage[s]"--a practice by many tribes.

  • @TheSparky777 - "How is marriage NOT a private act?" Simple. Marriage involves 3rd parties like the State formally endorsing it to make it legally binding. Or, for others, religious folks get involved to sanction it. And much, much more...

  • 'the meaning of marriage will be changed'? The meaning of marriage is mutual love. And the thing about kids being raised by their mother and father? What about divorced couples? Or death of a parent? Or unmarried parents? There are a hundred things which can stop a child having two loving parents, gay parents can help a kid like this

  • @TheSparky777 - "hard to believe that the only reason you are against" No, I said it AFFECTS me in that way. Understand the difference. You should also understand that u misunderstand the term 'right' when it was declared in Loving because the Loving court DID NOT mean gay marriage.

  • @zztstenglish I also find it hard to believe that the only reason you are against same-sex marriage is because of your taxes. If that were true you wouldn't only be against same-sex marriage, you would also be against heterosexal marriage. Your tax dollars pay for some of the marriage benefits for ALL married couples, not just the gay ones. I guess my question is why do you ONLY have a problem with your taxes going to gay couples but not the straight ones?

  • @TheSparky777 - ya but Baker v Nelson went to the supreme court eventually and was dismissed based on the merits of the lower court's decision. Look it up on wikipedia (although the site is down today due to a SOPA protest). As binding precedent, lower courts are NOT suppose to come to a contrary conclusion. If Baker is reversed, THEN gay marriage can proceed....

  • @zztstenglish That depends on the state's constitution. Baker vs Nelson was in Minnesota where the state constitution denied same-sex marriage. That doesn't apply to every state though.

  • @TheSparky777 - "deny rights to Americans citizens because of their sexual orientation" Marriage is not in the Bill of Rights. it was declared a right in Loving v virginia which was the SAME supreme court who dismissed gay marriage in Baker v nelson. Look it up

  • @TheSparky777 - (part 2) The strength of marriage comes from your personal, moral or even religious convictions...NOT gov't. It is folly to think gov't subsidies can enhance marriage. having said that, I suggest u research this topic regarding marriage subsidies..

  • @zztstenglish Regardless of it's effect on taxes, I believe it's wrong to deny rights to American citizens just because of their sexual orientation. From what I've seen, gay couples want to marry for the right reasons. On the other hand, I've seen plenty of straight couples that get married for the wrong reasons. Who would you rather your tax dollars benefit?

  • @TheSparky777 - "that's part of our taxes" I suggest u research this subject or I invite u to talk to a tax specialist/accountant or any reputable economist.

"going to the benefits of ALL marriages or just the gay ones?" I have an issue with SOME of the benefits going to ALL marriages because they have nothing to do with state interest. As far as I'm concerned, some are a waste of tax $. (part 1)

  • @zztstenglish But straight people aren't the ones that are denied the ability to get legally married to the person they love. And as far as WHY the government subsidizes marriage that's a part of our taxes. Do you have a problem with your tax dollars going to the benefits of ALL marriages or just the gay ones? If it's to marriages in general, I can understand that, but if it's only the gay marriages you have a problem with, that looks like a double standard to me.
