In this week's ChemHow2 video I recreate an experiment known as the chemical chameleon. In this experiment, potassium permanganate is added to a sucrose solution that is made alkaline by the presence of sodium hydroxide. This causes the manganese ions of potassium permanganate to change through different states, causing the solution's color to go from purple to blue to green to yellow-orange.
