I've never been thrilled by Donna's singing and some of it was cringe-inducing, but I did appreciate her energy. For me, her best live performances were on "Passenger." (But Warren Haynes nails Passenger vocals on the May 16 2009 version).

johns21074 nailed it. Donna was a member from 72 to 79. Donna sang with the Jerry Garcia Band (if you ever need to come down from a bad trip, que up "Cats Under the Stars") Jerry played with the Heart of Gold Band.
Was she perfect? No. Was she the worst sound to ever come through the soundboard? I don't think so... Bobby should have been shot for some of his wails (Not Fade Away come to mind()
Good enough for Jerry.
Good enough for me.

I gotta join the haters. Donna was disruptive besides her performances. She was a part of the band and I accept that, but not thrilled. I like her better than Bobby LOL!

Why hate on anyone in the band if you listen to them and enjoy the music? Donna was cool! Her and Bobby had a lively and charming rapport. Donna brought something to the band that was fun and different for them. GD loved playing music and exploring new ways of doing so. Donna was a reflection of the attitude, philosophy and style of the Grateful Dead. On some recordings her voice did not blend well, but I have heard dissonance and mistakes from them all at some point. How bout Phil singing?.. :)

@wobrien007 you made the most important point of all comments here.they all had shortcomings as we all do,i first saw the dead in march '73 in philly and always preferred the keith and donna years.i loved the real early stuff but donna brought a certain female-type essence to their sound that made those years so special.but what the hell do i know i'm a big zappa fanatic!!

@Deadjam5862 oh of course. I'm not judging anyones personality, just the voice. I'm not trying to be constructively critical, I'm just stating a personal opinion or preference. I love Jerry Garcia's voice, and I would much rather him over her.
