This example shows the 1176 in action when tracking vocals. Please excuse my lame singing. It was early in the morning!

  • Interesting demo, and by the way you have a GREAT voice! Man, if only I could push mine like that.

  • @audiotrax2000 Well, thank you much! I do try. If you dig this lame attempt on my part to be slightly cool, then you might like my band, sofajunkie. We have a CD on iTunes, and we're working on a followup that should be out in a couple of months.

    Rock on!

  • where is the difference in using an optional input transformer beside the higer price? how much does it effect the sound? did your clone has this 2. transformer? or any mod?

  • @highspooky Sorry for the late reply. The transformer on input can have a huge impact on the sound depending on the model used. The OEP trannies have a lot of color, as do some of the Cinemag and Jensen transformers with steel cores.

I have one clone with the OEP on input, and it is definitely more colored sounding than the electronically balanced one. It gives me that classic warmth and aggressiveness that is characteristic of the 70s rock sound.

  • @imagimotion I will definitely check it out!

  • @highspooky You can use any VU meter you want. I've used both Sifam ($60) and Calrad ($20) meters, and they both worked fine. You need at least a Lundahl LL5402 for the output, which is about $60. If you use the input transformer, you need either the Lundahl LL1540 ($60) or an OEP A262A2E ($30). The input is optional as there is an electronically balanced input circuit on most of the clones.

  • The schematics are all readily available online, and you can get info on building and modding the various 1176 circuits by doing a search for "prodigy-pro" and "1176". You should get a link to the forum that contains all the info you need. If that doesn't work do a search for "G1176".
