[Part 1 of 2. See below for links to further parts]
New South Wales Formula Vee 2008 (Round 2, May).
Eastern Creek (GP Circuit), Australia. 8 laps, Race 3.
Onboard from Tim Hamilton. Starts 28th. Finishes 6th.
Starting 28th after Race 2 disaster, Tim drives through the field to finish 6th (and setting the fastest lap) in the 'Trophy Race' for the weekend. Despite a self-confessed conservative approach, it represented a 22 place gain in what was effectively a 7 lap race.
A 3-car collision on Lap 3 brings out the safety car for 3 laps (laps have been cut, during part 1/2 transition) when Brad Lewis, Ian Chivas and Aaren Russell make contact on the main-straight (happens behind Tim just after towing past the Yellow car of Chivas). Race footage also includes the aerobatics of Ryan Stott on the last lap (Turn 2), launching over Adam Proctor and Dylan Thomas.
In Race 2 (video not uploaded), the Front-Left Steering arm worked loose while leading the race, Tim pitted for repairs and rejoined a lap down, finishing 28th. This has been a reoccurring problem since the car's debut, only its 3rd race meeting now, and will be reengineered before the next race meeting.
Race Results:
1st - Shane Hart (Blue Jacer F2K4 2004) FL= 1:50.1614
2nd (+0.0093s) - Mathew Pearce (Green Jacer F2K6 2006) FL= 1:49.7602
3rd (+3.0s) - Adam Proctor (Black Jacer F2K7 2007) FL= 1:49.8044
6th (+4.5s) - Tim Hamilton (Green Jacer F2K8 2008) FL= 1:48.8797*

how do u shift gears? is there a clutch pedal?
wavefrontmaya 3 years ago
Traditional H-pattern 4 speed manual, with clutch pedal. Gearbox is standard VW Beetle, not a fancy purpose built race box.
Right-hand shifter, use clutch on all changes, heel-toe on the way down (although if u time it right u can be lazy and just match the rev drop...).
Only use 3rd-4th once moving.

thx lots for the reply man... and how much BHP do u get from these?
wavefrontmaya 3 years ago
The top engines are rumored to be getting 65bhp at the rear wheels (so approx 80-90bhp at the engine).
60hp should be fairly common these days.
Personally, I've believe driveability and torque is more important than peak output.

are the formula vee cars like driving karts??
it looks like it, and is it a 3speed gearbox aswell?, anyway pretty cool

Similar, but not really.
Very direct and reactive like a kart, but more forgiving and stable due to having suspension (if its working properly...).
If you set them up really, really stiffly sprung then yes its just like a Kart. They pitch/roll more like a car.
I never raced karts so I'm probably not qualified to make the comparison between top-level sprint karts and Vee's.
4-speed H-pattern gearbox, but only use 3-4 once moving. Only ever used 2nd at the ultra-tight hairpin at Mallala in SA.
