Modern dance opera NO AI DI (in saami language noaidi, noaydde shaman, -ess) is based on the sagas, stories and legends of Sami nation. It is a story about an old shamaness who lives in a cave and feels the imminent coming of her death. The shamaness waits until someone will hear her joika (a specific form of ethnic Sami song), because before she leaves the world, she wishes to leave her wisdom and share her experience for the last time. The woman desires to remind people that the whole world which surrounds them is alive and it has a spirit, therefore it is necessary to respect it.

NO AI DI - story about human's search for the purpose of life and his place in the world, about the meaning of suffering and pain, from which good is born. It is a reminder about light and innocent human nature, about the essential principle that big things begin from the little ones. The main idea of this is that we see things not as they are in reality, but as we ourselves are..

Rita Mačiliūnaitė, composer:

"The elements of Sami folk music are combined with a language of modern academic creation. The mood in the music changes from the roar dwelling with cold to the warm intonations, from the sounds of freezing frost to the minimalistic stringed quartets enliven with the bells quivered by wind, from shamaness's whisperings and prays to the specific way of Sami singing called joik."

Premiere - 2010, 24 March, Arts Printing House, Black Hall (Šiltadaržio St. 6, Vilnius)

Duration - 60 min.
