Author and Stanford Law Professor Richard Thompson Ford examines the 2008 U.S. Presidential election, arguing that race, as an issue, has yet to be effectively addressed by either candidate.

-----

According to Stanford University law professor Richard Thompson Ford, America's conversation about race is often overwhelmed by distractions.

With Washington Post columnist Courtland Milloy, Ford discusses his newest book, The Race Card: How Bluffing About Bias Makes Race Relations Worse. Milloy moderates a lively Q and A session - The Aspen Institute

Richard Ford is the George E. Osborne Professor of Law at Stanford Law School. An expert on civil rights and anti-discrimination law, his academic work focuses on the definition of political and legal boundaries as instruments of social regulation, and as cultural phenomena (with an emphasis on their racial and demographic implications). He is also interested in humanities and the law and the intersection of critical theory and the law. Previously, Ford was a Reginald Lewis Teaching Fellow at Harvard Law School, a litigation associate with Morrison & Foerster, a housing policy consultant in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and commissioner of the San Francisco Housing Authority. He publishes regularly on civil rights, constitutional law, race relations, and antidiscrimination law, and he is the author of The Race Card: How Bluffing about Race Makes Race Relations Worse and Racial Culture: A Critique.

Courtland Milloy is a Metro Columnist at the Washington Post. Courtland Milloy's column began in 1983 and deals primarily with issues that affect the lives of African Americans.

  • I hate the term Race Card. The term is Racist,Racism is not a card.

  • V wow some cute guys in here!! lol. im SO horny!! e

  • It's not the media, I see his video on youtube. My candidate is Dennis Kucinich, but he's out.

  • americans dont think hes a great leader because the media dont show that hes a great leader.Nader has done more for safety and transparency in government by being a private citizen than most politicians!

Nader is straightforward about the crisis we face, and about what he would do about it.

Obama spends all his time obfuscating the issues so he can triangulate and make it seem like he is standing for positions he spoke against a moment ago.

Look at his performance in the 1st debate for proof.

  • That still doesn't make me want to vote for Nader, I need a concrete plan from Nader to feel more confident about him. He hasn't step up to make Americans feel like he's a great leader. His speech is not inspiring to me so I think he doesn't have the ability to rally the country or world together to solve any big crisis.

  • He said NO bailout for the wall street and corporate interests. He says that corporations dont represent the american people. They are not citizens. They shouldnt get handouts from the government. NO to the bailout and he says we need more regulation against wall street.

Obama has said that he is for the bailout. This isnt some small mistake-this is big. It gives unprecedented power to the fed and the secretary of the treasury and ensures that socialism will always bail out capitalism

  • Ralph Nader, lol In the time of economic crisis, he hasn't provide any good concrete ideas yet. Tell him to step up to the financial crisis then I might consider to vote for him.

  • uh ya,

FISA, Patriot act, threatening foreign policy toward Iran, Pakistan, Russia. Big Woop. If I wanted that Id vote for McCain.

    But I dont.

I want a change-a progressive change. Thats why Im voting for Ralph Nader, the only candidate who talks about restoring our civil liberties in addition to campaigning for workers rights, and equal rights for women and minorities.

    Checkmate!

"What will it take for these people to lose your vote"?-Ralph Nader

  • Lol.

I wish our politicians would take your advice.

  • An American leader will effect the world dramatically through approaches of foreign policy.
