@jay215ill I'm guessing you are just poking fun. If not realize that there are more volunteer firefighters in this country than paid and even though they get up in the middle of the night for little or no compensation they would still pull and ignorant glue sniffer like you out of a burning car because we've all learned that helping others is one of life's most rewarding acts.

@jjtrucks i dont think they cant make you buy ur own gear. if you dont like the provided gear, you can upgrade do a different brand or something but that you would pay for. Same goes for helmets, gloves, hoods, etc. im pretty sure they cant make u buy gear
hey guys..I'm looking into joining my local volunteer company and im pretty sure we have to buy our own turnout gear. Any recomendations on the kind/brand and how much its probably gonna run me. From what i was lookin at its gonna be like 1500 bucks.
thanks :D

@jjtrucks I haven't heard of a VFD that expects a volunteer to provide their own turnout gear. If you find this to be true then I would make sure the department isn't so poor that they are skimping on other safety aspects (annual pump and hose testing, apparatus maintenance, SCBA maintenance, etc). To answer your question, at least 1500 dollars. As long as the gear is NFPA certified, I don't really think the brand matters, it's going to come down more to personal preferences.
Good Luck

The green lights confuse lot's of people. Our responders are supposed to obey speed limits and traffic laws. As I'm sure you're aware, you tend to push it a bit more for a structure fire where therep are unaccounted people versus an automatic fire alarm. Bottom line, I think driving with e-flashers on makes as much sense as the green lights.
