PBA Bowling Shark Oil Pattern

What really makes this pattern difficult for a lot of bowlers, is that its proportions are the opposite of most patterns - it's heavier on the outside and drier in the middle, so any shots sent too wide aren't making it back. Because of that, it's damn near impossible to play parallel. You have the biggest room for error playing it somewhere in the middle of the lane (20 out to 10 to start). Depending on rev rate, you might have to move left or right, but the breakpoint is usually around 10

I got my first shot at the Shark a few weeks ago. Book avg 191. Rolled 555 first set, 603 second set. I played 5 (on right side) and rolled over 8. Classified Stroker by my knowledge.

the lanes by my house always changes them around and you cant know what the do so its impossible to be consistent...

You can wear a "groove" in the pattern, especially if people play the same line. That said, in your typical PBA league you probably won't find that. For me it is slowing down, getting a clean release, with a smooth, long follow through that keeps a well sanded ball on line. I play down the track area, 8/10 board. Just try to stay within yourself and not force the issue. Of course every bowler & house is different

even with the pattern being shortened to 43' it is the hardest pattern i have ever bowled on. on a house shot i averaged 206 but on shark i'm averaging 157

The video said that the pattern becomes easier as it breaks down. What a crock. It just forces you way the hell inside to crappier and more difficult angles until you have to loft the damn thing half way down the lane. How, exactly, is it supposed to become easier

@lionking300 It's definately a little tougher tougher pattern.but due to having to slow your ball speed it's a little easier to play with a mid to agressive ball with a lot of rev's to create better pin action.

Had to add more rotation and less momentum on the ball to get a solid pocket hit. Otherwise it overshot the pocket nearly half the time.

@busdriver1119 I didnt mean straight up the 2nd board. I ment straight at the pocket, or straighter. Very little hook. Naturally im not a big hook player, similar to norm duke so i just go outside and aim towards the pocket.

Hey, I don't mean know harm, but if you are playing the shark pattern from the 2nd board then you know something that the rest of us don't know. I have always had to attack the pattern from the middle of the lane and I am averaging 225 to 230 plus on a THS. I bowled on the shark all summer and I averaged 209 on it. If you are playing it from the 2nd boeard, all I have to say is wow, wow, and wow
OMFG this pattern is so hard. I booked a 218 last season on a house shot and in our PBA experience league we started on Shark for 3 weeks... my average is 163 for nine games. Only one 600 series in the entire league on Shark with lots of scratch bowlers competing. So little room to miss and when you hit the pocket carry percentage is low. Even started deeper and dulled up equipment to react sooner, had a good look but speed and release had to be perfect.

This pattern is fun to play on because you can play on differnt angals of the lane and even the viper pattern.
