The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and the NMMU Business School successfully hosted a national debate on hydraulic fracturing. "Fracking" is an issue of global importance and an opportunity needed to be devised for this hot topic to be surfaced to the public of South Africa. Panellists included the NMMU DVC (Academic affairs) Prof Piet Naude, Chairman of "Treasure the Karoo Action Group" Mr Jonathan Deal, General Manager of Shell SA Upstream Mr Jan-Willem Eggink, Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chambers representative Mr Andrew Muir and NMMU geology and mineralogy professor, Prof Maarten De Wit.
