ricky says on talking funny that shandling told him after the record that he was trying something that didnt quite come off. because of this i think he was trying to be awkward, controlling and spiteful to create an uncomfortable atmosphere and make gervais uncomfortable. prank the prankster in a way. he was unfortunate that it didnt quite come off but to be fair, who turned this interview off before it was over?

Garry was doing a whole bit here!
-
look at their styles of comedy and ricky's compliment on shandlings post-modernist take on a sitcom.....
-
both of them are joking, shandling is paying ricky a very high compliment by doing this piece. it's shtick by both parties.
-
Ricky misses the line: "Gary, would you like to remove the stick before we continue?"
-
it seems like they are riffing. I don't think that the akwardness is real. Very funny stuff.
-
is it real or acted out? the akwaredness that is, because it's T.V. after all

4:40 "We have 2 guests that are very concerned about the awkward energy on the show tonight"

you idiots... it's not a boxing match .. it's two jazz musicians trading 8's... wake the fuck up!!!
I think what makes this interview awkward is Gary is being a grown up and Ricky wants to be a child. The grown up refuses to let the child play and blocks all the way through. Ricky's humour is natural and Gary's is analytical. Both these guys are funny, but you feel Gary is trying to teach something to someone that hasn't really come for a lesson.

I wonder if Shandling is still a hero of Gervais' after this train wreck of an interview.
