Dr. M. Jamal Deen (Science and Technology)

Shortly after completing graduate studies in Guayana, Dr. Jamal Deen accepted a job as Assistant Professor at Simon Fraser University and immigrated to Canada in 1986 with his wife and infant son..

At first, Dr. Deen found it hard to attract funding and recruit graduate students for a new engineering research program. His success in overcoming these challenges, coupled with his exceptional teaching and research credentials, led to his early promotion to Full Professor in record time just after his sixth year of appointment.

Dr. Deen has become one of the worlds highest-ranked engineering scientists. Awarded seven patents in biomedical systems and innovative electronic devices and circuits, he has published more than 400 peer-reviewed scholarly articles. His inventions, publications, engineering models and innovative experimental techniques have been used by companies and research laboratories worldwide. Dr. Deens ongoing collaborations in micro- and nano-systems for environmental and health applications are producing world-class results.

Dr. Deens peers have elected him Fellow in eight national academies and learned societies, including the Royal Society of Canada the highest honour for scientists, artists and scholars in Canada. He has received seven best paper awards, and, in the last decade, obtained more than forty million dollars in peer-reviewed research funding from private and public agencies. Other honours include being elected Honorary Member of the World Innovation Foundation and winning the Callinan Award from the Electrochemical Society, the Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany and the Eadie Medal from The Royal Society of Canada.

Giving back to the community, Dr. Deen volunteered to develop and teach a ten-week Science/Engineering enrichment program at an elementary school; he also served on the Carleton Council on Education. Moving to McMaster University in 1999, he coached childrens soccer.

Dr. Deen has served as an External Examiner at the University of the West Indies, Trinidad and for doctoral students from the Americas, Asia and Europe. He also helps organize International Conferences and secure sponsorships for these conferences. Dr. Deen mentors students and lectures to the professional/academic community in developing countries. He actively follows the career development of students and researchers from his research team, most of whom have gone on to success in industry and academia.
