Reception of RNE2 90.0 mhz from Sierra De Almaden, near Jaen, southern Spain via Sporadic E, 13-8-07, 1512 local time.

Distance 1155 miles / 1858 km.

This reception is possible because of ionised clouds of gas forming in the atmospheres E layer which reflect signals back to earth which would otherwise head on out into space at a neat 180,000 miles per second!. This form of signal propagation is known as " Sporadic E". The main time of year for such reception is between late april and late august.

Receiver used was a Sony Sb920 tuner with a 4 element yagi antenna fed through a 20db amp.

  • There was an epic sporadic E cloud in the eastern U.S.A. on June 14 1992. I was working 28 MHz SSB and made contacts at less than 400 miles. The VHF guys were working sub 1000 mile paths and the 70cm guys worked huge paths. We were picking up Mexican television in Ohio!
