This is a well-known hymn, with words by the poet William Blake and music by C.H.H. Parry. I find it funny that words by a Swedenborgian mystic set to music by an atheist became the quintessential Anglican hymn, as well as the war cry of Social Gospellers everywhere.
To me, it's a song about striving for social justice and building a better world.

  • Blake was not a Swedenborgian

  • True, but if I recall correctly, he was influenced by the ideas of Swedenborg. Perhaps I should have stuck with the labels "mystical" and "unorthodox".

    Cheers,

  • Always have liked the melody of this tune. Nobody touches Greg Lake with ELP doing this however..

  • Nice!! You have a pleasant voice. One "constructive criticism" however: its a bit stodgy and plodding: you need to let the phrases and chordal progressions "breathe" and have their own freedom. But i do like your voice: its got good promise!!

  • Good voice

  • oh dear

  • Heard this song on a Monty Python sketch and kind of liked, had being Catholic I no idea it was a real Anglian Hymn, kind of nice

  • Just poor - played in the wrong key, wrong tempo, wrong chords to accompany it. Where are the complex chord sequences?

  • STOP! Please stop

  • wow great voice...
