Each face component has a simple list of behaviours in the presence of noise, and the people are just following these instructions. It's an exercise in understanding how a program works and how quite complicated things can emerge from quite simple instructions. It's also a demonstration of what happens when a bunch of CS profs and lecturers get together in a room with some cardboard and some clever instructions.
The guy doing the instructing is Paul Curzon from QMUL, and one of the eyebrows is Graham from Mancs. Not sure who the others are!!!
