  • India 3/4 66, lifted out of Dong Ha into LZ Crow (Helicopter Valley) for Operation Hastings. Dong Ha was just a dirt airstrip and a small Air Force Station next to it. How that would change. This video is of the Rockpile area.

Great seeing the M-14, a real rifle that shouldn't have been replaced.

    Semper FI.

  • I was with the first Marines 2/9 guarding airstrip. No sand bags, just laying in field next to Dong Ha airstrip. It was flat and unpaved. Small ARVN area and a Airforce Compound next by. Those photos look more like the Rockpile area West on 9 out of Dong Ha, just after Camp Carrol and before Khe Sanh.

  • @threefour66 Great video! I was a "deuce&ahalf driver for B Co-3rd Motors in '66. We trucked the first contingent of Marines and equipt up from Phu Bai into Dong Ha. I remember living next to the red dirt airstrip as the Seabees laid down metal on the runway. The only fixed wing aircraft flying in at that time were AF C-123's and Army Caribous. Later, I and another Marine were flown out to the Rockpile with two 50. cals off of our trucks at the request of an infantry commander during Hastings.

  • I am looking for information about the locations my father served in or near during the Vietnam War.Dong Ha was mentioned, His name was George J. Perron Jr. . Can anyone here tell me how I can find out what unit he was attached , and what he did. I have very limited paperwork of his including his 214 service number, request to work EOD and a copy of his promotion to Lcpl I believe. He served from 1967-1969. Any help would be great and my emails jason14x@comcast.net thank you all for ur help.

  • i got there in 4-69 served with 8/4 army artillery attached to the 3rd Marines i ran ammo out to our guns at the Rockpile the Marine name was Elliot. this is not Dong Ha. Rockpile area I'd say this video is showing the area north and northwest of the fire base mutters ridge is in the back ground from the guns we called it LBJ and the razor back. seems like it finishes on the north side of the rockpile

  • that's not dong ha, 2/9 juan is correct, my area at dong ha was adjacent to 2/9's area. i was there from operation hastings until late 67. our perimeter was beyond the med area and the air field along side the railroad tracks. 2/9 helped us man that area

  • @Juandecarloz You are right there were no mountains that close.

I was at the rock pile ,contien geolin and camp caroll and dong ha during 67,68.

    Usmc 3rd marine division.

  • This is definately 3/3 at the Rockpile in 1967. Early in 67 before we were issued M-16's. It is on Rt 9 between Cam Lo and Ca Lu .

  • Yep, It isn't Dong Ha. Also, it isn't 1966. CH-46 helicopters weren't in Vietnam in 1966. The work horse at that time was the H-34.

  • @threefour66 That is definitely the Rockpile.....

  • Yep, not the Dong Ha Airbase.

  • thee Rockpile 0:44
