Josh Hamilton tries to explain to his new workers why they shouldn't call erasers rubbers when they are selling them to American consumers because the word rubber isn't used the same as in India. The translation is lost even more when they think he is talking about condominiums when he's actually talking about condoms.

Outsourced is a modern day comedy of cross-cultural conflict and romance. Todd Anderson (Josh Hamilton) spends his days managing a customer call center in Seattle until his job, along with those of the entire office, are outsourced to India. Adding insult to injury, Todd must travel to India to train his new replacement. As he navigates through the chaos of Bombay and an office paralyzed by constant cultural misunderstandings, Todd yearns to return to the comforts of home. But it is through his team of quirky yet likable Indian call center workers, including his friendly and motivated replacement, Puro (Asif Basra), and the charming, opinionated Asha (Ayesha Dharker), that Todd realizes that he too has a lot to learn -- not only about India and America, but about himself. He soon discovers that being outsourced may be the best thing that ever happened to him.

  • @graceg94 no actually its not. India has so many native languages, that people have to use english at work as a common language just for the sake of convenience. Its been that way right from the beginning after India's independence. In China there was no such need until recently, whereas in India most of the educated population have been learning english even when there was no craze for immigrating to USA.

  • @SuperTruth77 Wow, that's terrible. I'd feel haunted too, but I can ask you not to feel haunted. It's not your fault.

  • It's interesting because I taught English in China for a while, and all their materials teach British English (such as "rubbers") because Oxford makes the majority of English teaching material there. It's ironic because the Chinese have no interest in Britain - they are interested in learning English because they either want to do business with Americans or want to immigrate. I'm guessing it's the same with India.

  • A few years ago I was managing a factory in India for a US-based company. The local manager was very eager to please, but I was puzzled when he said he would ‘prove his authority’ & asked me to point to any worker at random.

I chose a young lad, but was horrified when the guy then fired him on the spot. The lad broke down & pleaded with me that “my family will starve”, but was forcibly ejected & I didn’t want to undermine the local guy by over-ruling him.

The incident kinda haunts me still.

  • This is GE and NBC making fun of Americans not having job because GE offshored all of their work to foreigners. GE should move their asses offshore and take that Yuppie CEO with them.
