ENGLISH PHONICS TEST app - online demo - What is your time for Row C1?

A phoneme is a speech sound. A keygrapheme is a key spelling choice.

The programme opens in the interactive Picturechart (iPC), which has 120 colourful pictures representing 120 keywords. This module has been disabled in the demo version.

Click on the Control Panel icon in the centre of the Picturechart to go to the Control Panel (where you can normally navigate to the different modules and see personal best scores displayed on the time grid). Click the New User Box (top right), put in a User Name, then click ENTER (on your keyboard or on-screen keyboard). In this demo version, the options have been restricted. TIME and WC (Whole Chart) in LEVEL 4 - FREE CHOICE have already been selected. Click NEXT.

Clicking NEXT (bottom right) takes you to the interactive Graphemechart (iGC) and there is a workspace above it. The Graphemechart has the 120 keygraphemes of English. The keygraphemes are arranged in 44 boxes. There is one box for each of the 44 phonemes of English. The 24 consonant phoneme-boxes are located at the top, and the 20 vowel phoneme boxes at the bottom, separated by the black vowel line.

Click the green go! button to begin the test and start the timer (top right).

You will hear the keyword and see a medium picture in the workspace. The keywords appear in keyword order. On the Graphemechart, click the keygraphemes in sequence to spell the keyword. If correct, they automatically go blue (for consonants) or red (for vowels). The keygraphemes appear as black in the workspace and you hear the phoneme. Click the wrong keygrapheme, or click it in the wrong order, and it temporarily goes grey and you hear "Boing!". Click the wrong box, it goes and stays grey and you hear "Boing!". The phoneme is not in the word so any keygrapheme in the box would be wrong. When the word has been completed, the black keygraphemes in the workspace move together and you hear the keyword. On the Graphemechart, the THRASS keygraphemes in Row C1 go blue as you progress through the test, to show which of the keywords you have done. If necessary, you may pause the test by clicking on the right black vowel line.

The full English Phonics Test (EPT) assesses the user on the Whole Chart option in LEVEL 4. In this demo version, the user is tested only on the first row (Row C1) of the Consonant Section. The full test includes all four rows of the Consonant Section (located above the Vowel Line) and all four rows of the Vowel Section (located below the Vowel Line). When you have completed Row C1, you get a Clap Animation and the row resets. You must click the Control Panel icon or the (orange) EPT Box, below the WORD BANK Box, to return to the Control Panel and save your best time (otherwise your time will not be saved). Your time is displayed in the relevant box (LEVEL 4 C1) on the Control Panel. To try and beat your best time, click NEXT and repeat the test. The time to beat is displayed above the go! button. If you have beaten your best time, when you return to the Control Panel to save your time, you will see the Punch-the-Air Animation and hear a congratulatory cheer! In the full version, the times are stored permanently. In the Demo Version, the times are not saved if you change the User Name or leave the programme.

On the Control Panel, click the blue iPC button (top left) to return to the interactive Picturechart. At the bottom of the LEVEL 4 column, click the orange box (EPT Grade H and Star Ratings) to display a screen showing the EPT Grades and Star Ratings for completing the Whole Chart in LEVEL 4. Users who complete the full ENGLISH PHONICS TEST (using the app not the demo version) in just under one hour are assessed as Grade G (1 Star) -- approximately 3 minutes 45 seconds per row. Those who complete it in less than 30 minutes are assessed as Grade A (7 stars) -- approximately 7 minutes 30 seconds per row.

What will be your Grade for the full ENGLISH PHONICS TEST?
