On March 18, 2010, the Illinois Senate voted on S.B. 2535, a bill to require kids riding on the back of motorcycles to wear helmets. At the prodding of ABATE's lobbiest and members who paced the halls and sat in the gallery for days before the vote, the Senate eventually voted against the bill. This leaves Illinois still isolated as one of only three states that does not have any such law. The sponsors of the bill included Senator Donne E. Trotter (who introduced the bill), Sen. Jacqueline Y. Collins, and Kwame Raoul. Sen. Gary Forby, who ABATE both endorses and supports, led the opposition, saying he didn't want the Illinois Senate "telling me how to raise my kids." • Who really gives a shit ! If you feel happier without a helmet, do it ! I'll use my helmet always, but do what you want. Countries all over the world there are no helmet laws and its fine over there. Just accept it, get used to it and stop making a big deal of it. Holy fuck.

  • Millions of dollars of medical care will be paid by the taxpayers for the healthcare of a motorcyclist who could have prevented a serious braindamage simply by wearing a helmet. Think about what a "fiscally responsible government would do". Since the severely injured usually end up relying on public funding to take care of them after a serious motorcycle wreck, their freedom should take second place to gov't spending. We pay $millions because of their "freedom".

  • People are always pushing safety gear but they aren't talking to people in the real world. I live in Illinois where we have no helmet laws whatever & as soon as the weather turns hot NO ONE wears them. I just got back from a Saturday night ride & passed hundreds of motorcyclists & didn't see even 1 helmet. Also no one was wearing leathers either, just t-shirts and jeans. I felt a bit overdressed in a cotton vest and fingerless gloves. Right or wrong, THAT'S REALITY HERE.

  • I really voted thumbs up, not down. Sorry about that!

  • CONGRATS to ABATE and all of the other motorcycle enthusiats that contacted your senators to keep your FREEDOM! Thank you to all of the Senators that voted against Sen. Trotter!! RIDE FREE!!

  • Congratulations ABATE, thank you to the Senators who opposed this bill
