I'm co-hosting a Burns Night celebration later this month. Apart from doing the "Address to a Haggis" I'm going to be doing a couple of Burns song. This is me practising. I still can't get bloody endings to a song right . This song is a celebration of woman and a sermon on how dour sober folk can never be content - at least thats how I read it..The last verse is witty and hell I admit it ....so true!

In preparation for the Burns night I've been reading a lot about his life and times as well as his work. Fascinating man with a strong belief in the rights of men and women to freedom and equality and a healthy disrespect for preening authority. A passionate Scot without being hell bent on Nationalism - probably more to do with the relative infancy and potential of the Union and his lowlander heritage. An inspirational mind.

And Auld Scots language? That was the dominant language of Scotland - so why do national institutions chuck so much cash at Gaelic culture? Romanticism I fear!

Translations -
Wusny = were it not
gae tapsalteerie = Topsy Turvy /go wild
Douce = Serious /dull/ sober

  • Brilliant...again!

    (I recorded a version of this song for an album a few years back and my band vetoed it 'cause of my terrible singing!)

    I first heard it from the Blantyre band BMX Bandits.

  • @JCMcGee - Some great versions of this by contemporary singers. Have to admit I'm no big fan of McKellar and co from the days that TV had all those terribly proper tenors singing. My granny loved them. Just glad i never found a version by Sidney Devine. Knew a girl from Blantyre
