Excerpt from the film A RIVER CALLED TITAS.

Overwhelmed by the changes in his native East Bengal following the independence of Bangladesh, Ritwik Ghatak made this powerful adaptation of a celebrated Bengali novel by Advaita Malla Barman. It is the epic story of the destruction of a fishing village on the banks of the River Titas. "Ghatak depicts the rhythm of the fishermen's small world in a style which blends the lyrical with the documentary, and intersperses episodes from the sad lives of various characters" (Derek Malcolm, British Film Institute). Also known as Titash Ekti Nadir Naam and A River Named Titash. In Bengali with English subtitles.

Made in 1973, director Ritwik Ghatak's black and white film tells an epic story of a fishing village surviving along the banks of the Titas River. The members of the community battle with river bandits, death, and ultimately the River itself that is drying up and taking their livelihood along with it. The River becomes more like a character than a setting as it flows along at once peaceful, and abundant to dismal and scanty. The score encompasses the emotional and nostalgic feel of the film.
