The Carpenters second visit to the White House, 1 May 1973. President Nixon requested the group to perform for visiting West German chancellor Willy Brandt.
This visit landed right in the heat of the Watergate scandal. Richard Carpenter would later comment that after Karen passed away, former President Nixon sent a handwritten letter to the family expressing his condolences.

  • Lol..."YEE-HAW!" Karen was the lighthearted fun loving trickster. Richard, the over serious, formal, and stern lecturer.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

  • I think she said she barely "hit" the drums this night...she was nervous and didn't want to blow them out with the drum kit! :)

  • @mimicocoist He was a rock guitarist. As he describes it, he got a call one day from Karen and Richard while they were recording, and wanted him gto come to the studio to incluse some guitar tracks. This ultimately ended up as the guitar solo on the song Goodbye to Love, and was a trendsetter. Soon many love ballads would include a fuzz guitar solo in the middle of the song. This shows just how innovative Richard was in arranging their music.

  • A justin bieber fan didn't like this priceless video!!!!!

  • Tony was big deffernce from other guys. He was looked like a rock guitalist not Carpenters. Karen was so cute! I miss both!!

  • back when we had class in the White House

  • @aelialicinia The political stablishment used the Carpenters image to attack the counterculture movement. A&M Records had prohibited the Carpenters any political or controversial declaration.

Ah, the whore is Mammie Van Doren.

  • @FlyingMondongo Yes Kissinger is a butcher...and his "companion" does look like a whore...and the old adage seems to be true...only the good die young...this SOB is still alive. We can hope for justice in the next world.

  • LOve You Karen!

  • I read that she was afraid to hit the drums too hard during this show b/c she didn't want to offend anyone. Haha! I don't see how they performed. I'd be a bucket of nerves. I can barely stand it when someone watches me make a sandwich, much less something like this.

  • @Starlifter88 You're right. And even though Nixon was not a good President and a big lier I always thought that an invitation to play in the white house is some kind of an honor. The white house represents the United States, the corrupt citizens but also the good citizens which in a way the Carpeners represented. This is not Nixon house, this is the House where once Lincoln lived and he is part of our good history.
