Wow Pyne is a huge dick, I mean I understand how people could disagree with Rubin, even though I agree with him very much. But this interview just shows, in my opinion, how much opposition is showed towards any sort of new school of thought or theory. My generation will soon be the ruling generation of this country, and we will have to face social/political/economic issues with a new method and I am confident that we will encounter much heat like Rubin did here.

@DeluxeReissue Wow, I was just about to make the same point before seeing your comment. Yes, what an amazing contrast.
The other interesting contrast is between Joe Pyne of 1967 and the Bill O'Reilly's and Sean Hannity's of today. By today's standards, Pyne was being genteel, and certainly soft-spoken, although obviously very opinionated. It might have been understandable back then, but if any public figure were to walk out on that kind of an interview today, he'd be considered a real wuss.

YES! AMERICA NEEDS A STALINIST RUSSIA / MAOIST CHINA / POL POT CAMBODIA TYPE OF COMMUNIST TOTALITARIAN REVOLUTION IN THIS COUNTRY!!!!
You DO know that would've been the end result of the Jerry Rubin/Abbie Hoffman/Yippie Revolution had it happened? Freedom Schmeedom.

These days they wouldn't even be in the same room, much less a mike away from each other: Rubin would be on by satellite from effing Jupiter, & Pyne would be in a bunker purchased for Bill O'Reilly by Sandusky & Fine Associates, 'cause your right to free speech @$10 million a year shall not be infringed.

You have to understand that the mainstream media in those days (like today) was embracing the left, making liberalism seem sane and conservatism seem unreasonable. It had started in 1964 with the bashing of Barry Goldwater. Pyne was one of those who was going to fight back and bash the liberals with both fists. He took no prisoners. There really was no other conservative media alternative in those days.

@unfortunatebeam Just because with the nature of TV as it is today, any left-wing activist like Jerry Rubin coming on a show like Hannity's or O'Reilley's would do so with the expectation of rough treatment. Although Pyne was doing a bit of ranting and raving, he did allow his guests to have their say, more so than I think you could expect today, with the way the conservative hosts tend towards rapid-fire interruptions whenever their adversarial guests have a point to make.

@TroyOi Why do you think they would be considered a "real wuss" for walking out now and not a wuss for doing it back then? What allegedly changed perceptions and opinions of that according to you and why?
-
@Brdj010 P.S. Rubin changed his "catch phrase" from don't trust anyone over 30 to don't trust anyone UNDER 50 and became the prototypical Yuppie.
-
@Brdj010 You do know that Jerry Rubin died in 1994 right?
-
He is the reason 30 is still seen as old today despite it being very young. FUCK YOU JERRY RUBIN!!!
You sound like a candidate to do an oral history on Jerry Rubin.
Best...
