I first hesitated to upload this, as it kind of beats the purpose of both, TAS and hacks, but ultimately did it, as I haven't uploaded anything for a long time.
This is a hack created by myself (using SonED2) with the intention to tas it. It is only a level layout hack, as I don't plan to upload the hack, since it is basically impossible to play it unassisted. Not having much time, I also guess I won't continue on it anymore, which means chemical plant zone 1 is the last hacked act.
Tases are tool assisted speedruns, using modified emulators which have tools like slowdown and savestates. Read more in my channel or on tasvideos.org

Here are some basic things to keep in mind when creating such a hack:
-Avoid having sonic jump too much, as it greatly reduces his speed
-have enough ceilings to retain speed
-implement many slopes to help sonic get faster
-springs are nice to give initial speed, but too many make the run look "guided"
-unfortunately, you can't allow sonic to get too fast, for two reasons: 1. He might start to glitch into walls. 2. Turning the moment around is not easy, which means he will go mostly to the right, which means he reaches the end of the level too early.
-you can't mass spikes (and other objects), as they won't be displayed anymore

Notes to each level:
Emerald Hill 1: I used this level to get used to hacking, so it has all kind of things. Unfortunately, EHZ does not have ground enemies, which makes it awkward to place badnicks properly. Also, the tiles here are bad for building up speed or to make crossways (unlike CPZ).

Emerald Hill 2: Here I tried the concept of giving sonic only 1 ring, which he has to regain in order to pass through unavoidable hazards. I think for a hack to play, it's an interesting concept, but for the TAS it looks quite stumbling. Forcing Sonic to roll in order to destroy enemies looks like a way to slow him down before he glitches into walls. The spring part was meant to make sonic chose several times the right one out of the 3 possible ways (the other ones are spike dead ends), but it turned out to look like a guided route giving the impression, the player would not have had a choice anyway. Right before the boss, sonic has to clip through a wall, but it can't be seen properly because of the scrolling. For the boss I didnt really come up with an idea, so I placed springs on top of the low ceiling. As sonic does not roll after jumping from a spring, he needs to attack robotnick while jumping up.

Chemical plant 1: I went mostly for speed here. Placing rings turned out to be useless, as sonic can't collect them when he is offscreen. Half loop-de-loops seem to be one way to turn sonics momentum.

Btw, it is really frustrating until you figure out the two path system of sonic 2 ^^

It was fun to make it, but quite time consuming, especially when switching between SonED2 and the emulator. Enjoy!

Oh right, and thanks to the creators of SonED2 :)

  • You should totally release this as a Sonic 2 hack. Really great level layouts! :-D

Oh, and this is a brilliant speed run, too! ;-)

  • @NAEAN

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. However, uploading the hack does not make much sense in my opinion, as it is impossible to play the game unassisted. Also only the first 3 levels were actually changed. The rest is the same. If I ever do change my mind, I will update it in the video description. Thanks again ^^

  • @NAEAN hi what program did you use to edit the level layout? i have a program for it but for some reason it wont load the level. if you could help me that would be great since im planning on making a 16 bit version of sonic 4.

  • @sonicspeeder1

I used SonEd2, which as far as I know, can only edit the level layout. I guess that is the program you have too. You first need to split the rom into the single levels, before you can edit them. I suggest taking a look at sonicretro. Not only are there many hacking programs, they are as far as I know already working on a genesis version of sonic 4. Good luck

  • I created this hack, but since it is not really meant for other players (due to the fact that it is basically unplayble), I didn't name it.

@xrror I only know the AIR tas, but have no idea if it is playable (with just savestates), so I don't know if it was meant to be tased. Thank you very much for inspirational words, though.
