Guillermo del Toro: Vampires Have Been 'Mormonized'

Someone asked me why zombies and sparkly vampires have gotten so popular lately. I offered them my personal theory.
(1) Stephanie Meyer's sparkly "defanged" vampires explode in popularity (with teenaged girls)
(2) Everyone who is NOT a teenage girl despises Meyer's "defanged" vampires, and longs for a time when monsters just wanted to eat people.
(3) Zombies are the ultimate answer to Twilight vampires: they are their polar opposite. Zombies don't want to seduce the living; they want BRAAAINS.

yeah? but there is NOTHING romantic about twilight! They just ruined vampires to me for ever...

i read the first strain novel and to hear del toro talk about vampires beings "castrated" and "asexual" immediately reminds me of the fact that his vampire creations, as a byproduct of the changing process, lose their genitals

That's okay Guillermo. I'll judge for you.

This is why i love the Anne Rice vampires. You can get you're "romantic vamp vibe" right after they get done eating someone.

God damn it, he's so right.
Guillermo - One of the most exciting filmmakers working today.
