The difference between the flashing yellow arrow and the circular green is the meaning given to drivers who are NOT turning left.
Advantages for flashing yellow arrow: More time to turn, Eliminate4s yellow trap hazard, allows sequences not allowed if left turns can turn on circular green, allows more two-way streets to have green-light progression, saves gasoline.
I think I like this flashing yellow, we have lights here that have the 5lights, a green arrow, yellow arrow and solid green, yellow and red. When the green arrow turns to a yellow arrow then the solid red turns to solid green many turning left stop and will not turn inter the intersection and turn at all, even when it is safe. Driving is not rocket science, its mostly common sense, which many do not have today.
Confusing and foolish. Ill-conceived. The turn lane should get a RED arrow when time runs out on the green arrow...period. Anything else is asking for trouble. If you want to improve the flow of traffic, then fine tune your imbedded car sensors. This isn't rocket science people. GEEEEEZ !
@StarFighters76 It is, but a whole lot of drivers see green and just assume they have the right of way, even though there are signs up there saying they must yield to oncoming traffic. The flashing yellow is supposed to instill the idea of caution/yield to the driver wanting to make the turn. The only difference between the flashing yellow arrow and a flashing yellow circle.... is that the arrow is just for turn movements. They both mean caution/yield. The idea is to more strongly stress yield.
I'm from Indiana, and we haven't seen the new flashing yellow arrow. They should place a sign near the light that should say "LEFT TURN YIELD ON FLASHING YELLOW ARROW." You got a point.
I can tell you it was not very well communicated here in Kentucky. We have experience numerous fatal accidents since the change. Those relying on the "study" to guide their decision-making may want to recognize that "studies" are almost never conclusive.
Yellow flashing light intuitive? Uh-huh. How many times at nite have I been in the adjacent (thru) lane only to be alarmed by a flashing yellow left-turn light?
This is an engineering solution that has evidently ignored the driver behavior.
A video from MODOT huh, well out here in Kansas City, MO, they are popping up in various of places including Liberty and Independence. It freaked me out the first time I saw them (because I never seen anything like them and I do study on stop lights) but I don't get the point of them. Aren't these just another way of saying "left turn yield on green"?

ahh yes. the green dot was understood by most everyone. Now the flashing yellow arrow is understood only by people having it explained to them.
Way to go modot stl. I bet this has caused more accidents.
