A look at some of the classic aircraft on display at the Naval Aviation Museum at Yeovilton in Somerset, with some footage of Phantom and Buccaneer aircraft landing on HMS Ark Royal in the 1970s.
Politicians, media hacks, telly presenters, even the occasional armchair warrior, are keen to claim with a laugh that there doesn't seem to be much need nowadays for carrier borne aviation. The reality is very different as a quick study of post war aircraft carrier operations will reveal. You know where to look!
When natural disaster strikes, you will regularly find a US aircraft carrier on the scene within hours (often thinly reported by the world media), well before the UN has even put their caterers on high alert! When your nationals are stranded in some comedy state with bullets whanging around their ears, they are reassured to see a squadron of friendly naval aircraft which miraculously closed the hostile coast at dawn, ready to restore peace and tranquility.

On the subject of which, the music. It is of course "Sailing" by Rod Stewart which accompanied the BBC documentary series "Sailor" about life onboard HMS Ark Royal during a deployment to North America in 1976.
