An update on my second attempt to grow potatoes using the garbage can method. Plus, an explanation of how it works.

  • I have a simmilar setup with a box that I build the sides up and add soil as they grow taller, this also allows me to un screw one of the sides & carefully dig around for 'new' spuds.

  • You can also layer straw and manure/compost as the plant grows. A 50 gallon drum will harvest a boatload of potatoes using this method because the potatoes grow the entire length of the root which would be huge in a 50 gallon drum. I'm enjoying some freshly harvested red potatoes right now.

  • how long to harvest?

  • So did this work!?

  • i had seeds from walmart and they did not do good ,i got a bag of potatoes and let them go to seed and they are still growing in my garden, the seed potatoes i dug up and are small potatoes so i will buy them buy the big bag in grocery dept

  • @UnoRaza I've seen amazing results from both

  • @stymye Do 5 gallon buckets work well for this or are the bags so much better it's not worth messing with buckets and their rigid walls? Thx!

  • @UnoRaza store potatoes are determinate so they can be harvested at the same time ,,, you have to use indeterminate potatoes for this setup... thats the problem,,, lack of research(google)

  • store bought vegetables are sprayed with an anti sprouting/growth agent,, potatoes ,garlic,,onions ,, ect... that's why they don't do as well ..if they do work well, your just lucky . also you won't get even close to a great tasting vegetable as the ones you buy from a garden supply ! ... times are tight but some things are not worth being cheap about.

  • awesome thanks!
