Zakat Foundation has been intensifying immediate relief efforts in Haiti where a major earthquake struck Tuesday, January 12, and has possibly killed thousands of people. According to the UN this is the strongest earthquake to hit the Caribbean nation in 200 years.
Zakat Foundation has arranged for two cargo planes with relief supplies such as food packages, medical kits, and water to leave Miami later today. The poorest country in the Western hemisphere, Haiti does not have the proper infrastructure to respond to such a disaster. The death toll is expected to rise as collapsed homes are being dug through, and the Caribbean nation is appealing for international help.
Reuters television footage from the capital Port-au-Prince showed scenes of chaos and dazed civilians sobbing amid rubble. Zakat Foundation Executive Director, Khalil Demir, says, In this humanitarian disaster, we hope that everyone is able to support the relief efforts in Haiti. It is imperative that we act swiftly in order to avoid further disaster in areas where survivors face the threat of disease and hunger.
