Dr. Eileen Yamada, of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), says 2010 was a record year for pertussis (whooping cough) in the state. CDPH is seeing high numbers in 2011, as well.
You can protect yourself and your family by making sure your children are vaccinated, or by getting the booster shot if you are an adolescent or an adult.
A new law takes effect this year requiring immunization for all students entering grades 7 through 12.
Dr. Yamada says parents should check their children's immunization records and, if necessary, make an appointment with their health care provider. Doing this sooner rather than later means parents will avoid the back to school rush, and it will provide protection against whooping cough throughout the summer and fall.
