From the start point in Penrith , Cumbria there will be a staggered start for the first leg of the cycle route (approximately 22 miles). The way-marked and marshalled route will take teams to the foot of Helvellyn. Team members will leave their bikes with the support team and head off on foot to the summit a vertical height gain of over 2,500 ft from the start point, where team logs will be checked and signed by the marshal. Then its back down to the start point to retrieve bikes and set off for the shores of Thirlmere some 1.5 miles away to tackle the canoe section of the challenge. Once the water section has been accomplished its back on the bikes for a final dash back to Penrith (a ride of approximately 26 miles) and a triumphant celebration with the Race the Sun team.
