It occurs to me that no broad strokes can be made of the character of any individual, "criminal" or not.

See Brian... everyone is a victim. We can all look at reasons, causes for our circumstances and edict those circumstances determine our behavior. But turn that analysis outwards and everyone else are free-agents.

In other words, to interview a pimp, he/she might say that circumstances caused their behavior and the hookers are "Bitches who want money" rather than "Assholes who want pussy".
