This is me doing inazuma at the 26th annual Tokai area Iaido seminar and rank test in Hamamatsu, Japan, Sep 7, 2008. The event was attended by many lower dan ranks and dozens of 6th dan and above iaidoka; quite a few 7 and 8dan, a 9dan and a few 10dan by my count. The embukai was instructed, and shinsa overseen/judged, by Ikeda Takashi souke - the grand master of MJER. Awesome event I'll have more video of some extraordinarily skilled iaidoka, including souke, doing kata and maybe even some of Ikeda souke teaching in the future. Just a quick clip of me doing a kata that I thought looked fairly decent for now... This was during the embukai portion. I also did inazuma in the shinsa (test) and must not have been too bad I received my 4 dan :o)

  • good form sir, good form! well done indeed, nice zanshin and ma-ae and very good intent.

  • Kind and respectful comments are gladly accepted :o) thanks for watching

  • Of course. That's why you put yourself up on Youtube. For the "kind and respectful" comments. Amen?

  • Hallelujah!

  • This performance is way better :) The "SWOOSH" came true my computer over here. But I can't spot Soke ;o)

  • Thanks yeah that really bothered me not hearing the blade cut the air, I guess I'd better always use a katana with a shinogi-ji so it can be heard huh! I just removed that 'goofed on the upload' version of this video but will have one or two more up from this soon... I'm maybe halfway done putting together 8 or 9 minute video from a bunch of little video clips I took, editing little by little will have it on here before long I hope I hope...

  • nice stuff =D

i just started iaido, literally last thursday its way harder than it looks

  • How can you withdraw the blade facing up so fast and manuber it so you take your opponent in front of you down? It is fascinating to be able to do all those motions and still manage to cut anything in your path

  • two things regarding your (first) step...I was doing something similar when my sempai said it was wrong. I brought my leg in to assist me in getting up from tatehiza, but he told me to slide it directly back.

Also, not sure if eishin ryu is different in this aspect, but your back foot is angled to the side a bit too much imo.

  • You sit in Tate Hiza much more comfortably than I do - I find it very painful I am sad to say.

I note that you use the method of wearing the sword with the tsuba left and rear of centre i.e. kashira holds centre. Is this a personal choice or one mandated by your school?

  • Not at all bad, good sir. Especially considering you knew you were being filmed whilst executing a kata from an awkward stance (for most Westerners).

  • I hear ya... Tate hiza took me a long time to get used to. I still am still not comfortable with it. Need to train more. ;)
