and all of those musicians put on a persona in their own way. it just wasnt as edgy as pop is now, which basically started with Michael Jackson. Pop is admittedly simple.

While I love all those artists you mentioned and don't care for Lady Gaga music, you may want to look at her videos more carefully. They're not random, sometimes they make a lot of statements about sexism and other issues (like what people consider "freakshows"). I personally think there's more directs ways to do it then her style (which I don't care for), but I get what she's talking about and respect it.
