Monica Gaughan is broadly interested in social science research methodology applied to public health policy and research. Her funded research focuses on diversification of the scientific and public health labor force. She is the principal investigator of a NIH R01 award investigating the effects of federally targeted and untargeted interventions on the persistence of under-represented groups in public health careers. She is also princiapl investigator of a CAREER grant from the National Science Foundation examining the public policy implications of university determinants for the recruitment, retention, and promotion of female faculty on science-related faculties. Finally, she is a co investigator (Julia Melkers, PI) on a NSF-funded project that studies the professional networks of under-represented groups. Gaughan also studeis late adolescent transitions to early adulthood using the National Logitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Particular projects in this research stream include the effects of early life course behavior on the incidence of low birth weight and poor child health, and racial differences in the development of substance abuse trajectories and their consequences. Dr. Gaughan is also a faculty member of the College of Public Health's Center for Global Health.
Professor Gaughan is highly articulate, engaging and, it appears, passionate about her subject and how it relates to the health of the entire population and the opportunities for present and potential healthcare professionals.
