It's remarkable how much a person's enjoyment of something is dependant on the responses of the people around them. If everyone else is enjoying a show, their laughter will invoke yours, and the atmosphere will feel lighter overall, but if circumstances are such that an audience happens to respond badly at the start, it sets the theme for the evening, and even if the jokes are great you won't find them funny.
