Video based Hand Gesture Recognition

Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation developed a technology which allows for interaction in multi-user multi-display environments across boundaries of individual displays per hand gestures. The video based system captures
• 3D-position of multiple hands and fingertips
• User-defined handsymbols
in real-time. In contrast to common multi-touch technologies sensing is not limited to any display surface and by defining specific handsymbols for triggering action human-human and human-computer interaction can be separated. In order to use the system a stereo camera and appropriate lighting in near infrared has to be installed in the multi-display environments.
