This is another very popular folksong of the Roman area. It was written in 1926 by Pio Pizzicaria and Romolo Balzani. Gabriella Ferri recorded the most beautiful rendition of this song. Here are the lyrics and a (really bad) English translation. I just want to say thanks to all of you for your friendly support in these difficult times. I won't forget it. Thank you.
BARCAROLO ROMANO
(Pizziacaria-Balzani)
Quanta pena stasera..
c'e' sur fiume che fiotta" cosi'
sfortunato chi sogna e chi spera
tutti ar monno dovemo soffri'
Si' c'e' n'anima che cerca la pace
puo' trovalla sortanto che qui...
Er barcarolo va contro corente
e quanno canta l'eco s'arisente
si' e' vero fiume che tu dai la pace
Fiume affatato fammela trova'..
Piu' d'un mese e' passato
da quel giorno ch'io dissi:" A Nine'..
quest'amore e' ormai tramontato
lei rispose: Lo vedo da me.."
Sospiro', poi me disse:" addio core..
io pero' nun me scordo de te!"
Je corsi appresso ma, nun l'arivai
la cerco ancora e nun la trovo mai
Si e' vero fiume che tu dai la pace
me So' pentito fammela trova'..
Proprio sotto ar battello
s'ode un tonfo ed un grido piu' n la'
S'ariggira je fa' er mulinello
poi riaffonna e riassomma piu''n la
soccorete e' na donna affogata
poveraccia penava chissa!?
La luna da lassu' fa' capoccella
rischiara er viso de Ninetta bella
cercava pace ed io nun je l'ho data
Boiaccia fiume je l'hai data tu!!..
THE ROMAN BOATMAN
Theres sorrow tonight
Over this flowing river
Unfortunate is the one who dreams and the one who hopes
Everyone must suffer in this world
If theres someone whos looking for peace
He can find it only here
The boatman goes upstream
And when he sings the echo resounds
If its true, river, that you can give some peace
Fairy river, help me find it
It was more than one month ago
When I said Nine,
This love is over
And she answered I already knew
She sighed and said: Fare thee well, my love
But Ill never forget you
I ran after her but I couldnt reach her
Im still looking for her but I cant find her
If its true, river, that you can give some peace
Im regretful, help me find her
Just near the boat
Theres a shout and a splash
Something turns and whirls
Then it sinks and surfaces again
Come here, its a woman, shes drowned,
Poor thing, who knows how much she was suffering...
The moon up above begins to shine
And it lights up the face of my beautiful Ninetta
She was looking for peace, but I denied it to her
Damned river, it was you who gave it
