In honor of recently completing Gauntlet Legends (for the N64), I decided to upload a song from the 90's "mod scene" called "Run the Gauntlet". It is one of my all-time favorites. Unfortunately, there is no credit given as to who wrote it, so I guess it's anonymous.

The screenshot is from Gauntlet II arcade, since the synth voice "whoo" noise reminds me of the title theme from Gauntlet II (which had a similar noise).

Unfortunately MOD players for Windows vista are not as good at rendering these old MOD files. Even XMPlay had trouble playing this one. I found a java MOD player that did a (mostly) good job (although the pitch slide at 1:22-ish is still messed up, but the rest of the song is good). If I get an opportunity, I will look for one of the old MOD players and run it in an emulator and re-record it to eliminate that mistake.

  • Thanks for posting! Reminds me of the good old MOD and S3M days!

  • It seems many of the great mods back in the day were by nameless ones. Like Popcorn....who did that one?? I think nobody ever knew... This is one that I always wished would last much longer. Such amazing musical work...maybe one day somebody will re-create it in HIGH Fidelity and real instruments and better sounding synths. That would be something for sure!

  • This mod was one of my favorites as well!

You might try Modplug Player, which I think was considered the best and most accurate player for windows. Or maybe I forget, but I think that was it. XMPlay wasn't bad, but I think there were better players out there. FastTracker 2 is what I used to run stuff in...or WOWII - both of course in DOS, but likely you could get these to work via DOSBOX, OR ... run actual DOS in a virtual machine.

  • This music is amazing. That's all there is to say.
