You could also lure an enemy through the alarm I though.

true at lba 2 the penguin was also usefull to rescue the mosquibee queen you pass by the detector with closes the prision door and the use your penguin to pass by the detector and the door opens again, doing that u dont need to do all the box trick

I think they did it on purpose. It was also in LBA 2 with a few things.

The penguin bug is very severe, because it makes that part of the game easier, as the first stage inside the temple is the trickiest one.
They should have thought about that, as almost every LBA player found out that trick.

you can get up you just have to go round to some stairs kill a skelaton thing hit a switc and go through a few more rooms and there is a platform that goes up to the begininng of the area. sorry i cant help in full detail
