Michael Blowen and Diane White left their hectic big-city jobs at The Boston Globe for the ease and slowdown of semi-retirement. They moved to Midway, Ky., a town not known for its hustle or bustle, and settled in to lower-impact routines with an eye toward a little quieter lifestyle.
Their surroundings might be quieter than when they lived in metropolitan Boston, but it is doubtful they are any less active. Blowen and White now live on Dream Chase Farm, the home of Old Friends, a haven for retired Thoroughbreds between Georgetown and Lexington. Their days start at 6:30 a.m. when they begin feeding the 24 Thoroughbreds on the farm, and might end at 5 or 6 p.m. when the last visitors finally depart. Regardless of the long hours and the 24/7 commitment, Blowen said he wouldn't have it any other way.

  • We visited Old Friends Farm on a field trip last year. It was such a wonderful place and the stories of how they have rescued so many retired race horses was very moving! The owners/operators of the farm really care for the horses and treat them very well. If you ever get a chance to visit...I HIGHLY recommend it!

  • We slaughter hundreds of thouands of horses each year in this country -- to be eaten overseas by humans. Please contact your Representatives and ask them to co-sponsor HR 503 and ask your Senators to co-sponsor S311 -- help us ban the slaughter of horses; support the American Horse Slaughter Protection Act.

  • what do they do to deserve it? Nothing. They can't help needing food, vet care, land to graze on. None of these things are free. I watch Real Housewives of Wherever and The Fabulous Life...horses starving (heck, children too, in this recession) and some humans live so oppulently its ridiculous. Anna Nicole went to the Derby, wonder if she donated to Old Friends. My bet would be that she couldn't care less. Those who have the means to help are greedy and selfish, for the most part
