  • And this is the future of our country? If you have a death wish I hope you don't take anyone else with you. Did you learn any common sense at anytime in your young life? Trying to be cool on youtube won't protect you from your self. It is obvious that being arrogant and ignorant is the most favored thing of the 17-20somethings to do these days, hope some of the comments get into your head and help you live a little longer.

  • WoodenNicol , your statements are very true!

And yes though I haven't turned any thing that large since, I am the future of our country.

  • In a situation as this project I highly recommend a motor cycle helmet.I use one from time to time.

  • That is a great idea! Brilliant. Thanks.

  • Plus, every one keep talking about a face shield.

How is that going to help me if 80 lbs of green catalpa flies off the lathe at my face?

The difficult I can do right a way, the impossible takes a little longer.

  • do yourselves a favor before you get seriously hurt.

go to a woodshop, and ask someone there how you should use that machine. the rpm's are way to high, the tool rest should be stable, and the chisel shouldn't be aimed at your crotch. the safety glasses are a very good idea, but you need a face shield. you are making me very nervous watching this video. please get some schooling on this machine. don't do that again.

  • So I have done stupid with zero's on the end!

I have to confess I love the reactions I get out of this video.

And yes, I was a high school shop teacher for the public schools and yes we did win first place in the state of Oregon for woodworking that year.

No. I won't do that again.

Yes, I'm glad I didn't clock my crotch with the tool.

because yes, I do to have a family some day!

  • Screw all these safety nuts! I've been sawing down trees and sawing them up on my saw mill for years. I wear flip flops, shorts, and a tee shirt. I also drink beer while doing those things! I can't stand listening to these OSHA loving safety nuts.

P.S. I still have all my fingers and all my toes. Though I did get a splinter once.

  • lathe abuthe!

Hey, Matt, have you ever seen "Stapler Fahrer Klaus"? Look for "German Forklift Training Video(funny)" on youtube and you may wish to create your own safety video for high schools called "Mr. Matt: Shop Teacher Gone?(wild)" .

  • You should probably run the lathe at a slower speed until the work piece becomes round and therefore balanced. You're tearing up the lathe by running so fast and out of balance. Also, the tool rest needs to be attached more securely. The way you have it, you might never actually get to roundness since the tool is allowed to follow the profile of the wood.

  • you are extremely fortunate that you didn't kill yourself. I had a small bowl fly off my lathe and crack me in the head. That along with a fair amount of blood taught me a lesson. turn down the speed and quit acting like some kind of "fonzie the wood turner" If that big piece of wood had of flown off the lathe, it would have killed you.

  • You want to rough out a big piece like that at much slower speed...that was around 500 rpm, you needed maybe 100 rpm to start, then increase the revs once it is round and balanced. Nice piece of wood.

  • @mfunkbarley you phuckin turned that shyt as long as it doesn't move you're safe I think the tool rest should be further away and a stronger piece of steel should be applied as the shank what I mean is a thicker piece of steel but once the wood is leveled in diameter it doesn't shake anymore anyway the main ingredient is the shaking and size but I likey. "thumb$"

  • Why don't you find another hobby rather than give real woodturners a bad image?

  • Wow, you truly have no common sense or any idea what the hell you are doing. As well, you are abusing the hell out of the lathe and it's bearings! You've probably done a fair amount of damage and don't even know it!

When a lathe that big is rocking that bad from an off-balance piece, you are just destroying the bearings and stressing everything to the max.

And the face shield is to protect you from large chucks that fly off, not the whole log. If you hold it properly, that won't happen.

  • Insert favorite pejorative here. Scary video indeed.
