colour has been around for like 60 years

Actually longer. Color (or from when it really started, Technicolor) was around since 1924, but used since 1929. They actually had only 2 color film since 1916, but used full color in 1929.

No, the problem was before the 1940s (possibly not even until the 1960s), color was basically like Fort Knox.

though, as others said, color has been around since the 1910s, but just for those who could afford it.
