Divide when the plants are dormant in July. Large pieces may bloom the following year. Small ones, may not. You might be able to move the plants in very early spring, but division probably will thwart blooming.
Thanks for this video. I have three large patches (10 feet+) of irises that have spread out. I would like to move them to different areas of my yard. What you didn't say is when it should be done: before bloom, just before dying back... If you divide during new growth before bloom, can you expect blooms that year?
