VINNIE VINSON: In 1983, I was the promotion director for KCBR, a new independent TV station in Des Moines, IA. Those call letters now belong to a radio station in Colorado. This was a couple of years before Fox and the other latecomer networks. The station was truly independent, showing reruns and lots of movies.
Some of the movies just weren't very good. It was decided to show them when there wasn't much of an audience. I believe the wraparound segments were the brainchild of George Vincent, the station's business manager. Fabian Fontaine was played by David Miller, a production assistant.
As far as I know, George had no prior performing experience. He was just a naturally funny guy. Kevin James, of "The King of Queens" reminds me very much of him. I've seen each do some incredible stunts. I was astounded the time George came running at my parked car. He jumped onto the hood, ran over the windshield and roof, then down the back glass and trunk without leaving a mark!
Most of what you see was created by him, but just about everyone at the station pitched in now and then with a few ideas. When I saw that "Car Wash" was destined for late night broadcasting, I protested. That became a skit, which follows the title sequence. It wasn't scripted. We barely talked about it. We just did it. I think this probably aired in May of 1983.
When our general manager left, one of the lawyer owners decided to manage the station. At that point, he insisted on reading a written script before the show was taped. I suppose he wanted to make sure the station wouldn't be sued.
I supplied the decrepit red recliner. It had been taking up room in the garage for a couple of years. It looks better on camera than it was! One of my castoff TV sets can be seen with the floor junk. I assume other staffers contributed some of the "props."
Living in Marion Iowa with his high school sweetheart. He has one grandson Max, who appears to be carrying on the family legacy of perverse depravity. Thank you Vinnie! Tyler Vincent
