Hockey Slapshot Fundamentals

The main things to focus on as highlighted in the video are:

Lower Body: * Load your weight at the start of the shot on your back leg. * As you begin the shot drive off your back leg with a lot of force toward your target * Explode through your core and hips to generate torque. (This require that you open up your front foot to allow your hips to clear through).

Upper Body * Start with your hands about 2 feet apart.(This allows for stability when you strike the ice and also flex from your stick). * When you start the back swing dont open up your wrists. * For a correct back swing simply rotate your upper body in a circular manner. (This creates the torque needed for a hard shot). * At the pinnacle of your back swing, the top of the stick should be even with your shoulder or just above it. (Taking the stick back any farther wastes critical time that a defensive player can use to poke check the puck or block the shot.) * As you generate power on the accelerated down phase, make sure there's a lot of downward force on the bottom hand. * Make impact with the ice 4-6 inches behind the puck with the toe section of your stick. (With the force of the bottom hand this will cause the stick to flex which puts the entire blade on the ice. YOU SPEND $200 ON A STICK SO LET IT DO SOME OF THE WORK FOR YOU). * At the moment you strike the puck you want to snap your wrists over. (Just like the wrist shot you want to be looking down the top of your bottom hand during the follow through). * Follow through with grit your teeth speed.

I know this is a complicated shot and the video is a little long so if you have any questions please leave a comment and I will do my best to answer them all. Focus on these fundamentals and dont worry about raising the puck. It will come.

Thank you very much for your interest and good luck. Practice, Practice, Practice.

  • finally!! been trying to learn slap shot fundamentals by going through youtube videos .. i went through about 25 of them that were horrible and taught me nothing. Your video is very thorough and it communicates everything i need to go and practice and get it down. thanks. i'm now headed to the rink on a mission to dominate.

  • @thelawless999 awesome man. How is the practice working? If you have a back yard where you can set up a net and plexiglass shooting surface over the summer, then this will be very beneficial.

  • hey i got a question, im practicing on my slapshot alot but i always shoot them way too high, any tips for keeping it a bit lower but still off the ice?

  • @zx420xz The first thing is too really get the fundamentals down as shown in the video. If you are slicing at the puck then there is no way to control it. But if you shot like in the video then it's a matter of controlling your follow through. The tip of your balde should be putting at the target. So if you follow through high pointing at the top of the net then it should go high and vice versa. Hope this helps.

  • thx man i'm 14 and when I watched the video i went on the ice later and it added like 7-12 mph on my shot thx again

  • @best1airsofter That is awesome man. It all comes down to continued practice. Thanks for the comment.

  • what difference in your stance is there if you are taking a slapshot while moving towards the net? I just got on a jv team for a high school and can't take a good stationary or mobile slapshot. any advice towards this?

  • thanks man everyday after school i go out in the driveway and shoot 75 pucks and i've noticed a huge improvement just after about 3 days my shot was getting better. thanks again!

  • How do you take a mobile slap shot I can't get my feet right

  • Hey guys, found a great video in which you can really see nicely how the toe of the stick touches the ice the first. This was the missing link for me.The shot is done by Ron Hainsey a NHL d player.

As i can't post links, the video is called Science of Hockey: Slap Shot

  • This is the best vieo on how to take a slap shot! Great job man ! I especially love how you split up the different movements e.g. legs, hands, flex

Please do a snap shot tutorial.Love you stuff!

  • @magicsuperman13 puck board i think

  • What kind of a surface are you on?

  • i have wooden bat, do i have to flex with the toe of the blade?

  • So the only factor to how high or low your shot is is where you point your stick on the follow thru? theres no difference in the way you approach the shot on wether or not you want the puck up high or to stay on the ice?

  • this helped alot thanks
