Veronica Mars has got to be one of my favourite shows of all time. No seriously, it's funny, witty, smart, progressive. Women are technologically savvy, the privilege of white rich kids are exposed (well sort of...), and it generally has progressive commentary. Watch this video for the things I loved about the show and also the more problematic elements... and keep watching because I included some hilarious and entertaining clips from the show.

ps. Steer clear of season three, my love for the show ended during the last episode of season 2.

  • Hi, Still waiting on that Veronica Mars follow up in relation to how the show dealt with sexual violence.

  • @BastetAsshur ah! I know I know... one of these days it will exist.

  • @feministfrequency I just started watching the series, at least based on the pilot I thought the rape backstory was handled in a very realistic fashion... it was not the driving purpose of her character... but the police laughed her off, which in my experience really happens quite often and it was very subtle and understated.

  • @PetiteOzma Just wait until you get further into the story (because I agree, the police laughing at her happens way too often).

  • @feministfrequency Okay I'm a few episodes in haven't gotten to that stuff yet but I was impressed with the way the Transwoman was dealt with in the Meet John Smith episode... yeah her son had a bad reaction but overall she was so normalized it's rare to see a transperson who isn't a criminal or a murder victim on TV. Or at the very best, comedy relief.

  • @PetiteOzma ya absolutely.

  • @ngordon88 I'm a male, heterosexual, "african-american" male as well and I think this show was impressively well written. It's kind of insulting to insinuate that the only reason somebody enjoys something is because of some ideological high horse they're riding around on. Do you only enjoy [insert something made by or staring a black actor or musician] because of your ethnicity? Anyhow, she explains fairly well her rationale for the positive opinion.

  • I miss Buffy...

Now you made me sad D=

  • Please make the video regarding sexual violence! I'm just finishing up the first season and I'm a little infuriated with the way they handled her rape -- how she thought it was consensual even though both parties were drugged.

  • Veronica Mars is a really great show. I really agree with what you were saying in this video. :)

  • Downloading thanks :D

  • I <3 and miss Veronica Mars, oh and Joss mentioned Veronica Mars in the Buffy Season 8 comic books.

  • I love Veronica Mars and have since the show started. Thanks for doing such a great video.

  • Veronica Mars 4ever in my heart :)

  • Hi! I watched Veronica Mars at your recommendation and for the most part liked it, but I agree--the handling of sexual abuse was done poorly, especially at the end of season 2. I was very disappointed the writers decided to essentially say, "People who are sexually abused are violent psychopaths that deserve no sympathy". Or that's how it seemed to me; it feels like they wasted the opportunity to realistically explore the after-effects of abuse. Hope to see your follow-up video someday.

  • Now I feel foolish for not seeing more than a few clips at a time of this show and not taking the time to watch it. I did see one scene that would lead me to agree with you about Veronica and her dad. I remember watching the episode she did some sort of detective exam and she is gloating over how she got a higher score than her dad only for him to bring out his paper and basically say "oh I'm sorry, did I say I got this score? I meant to say I got this score". It was very funny.

  • I'd say it's less "comparable" to Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and more "a three-season love letter to it." Witty blonde takes centre stage in a wide riff on an otherwise male-dominated fiction genre, with a crew of a tech-savvy girl, a guy who doesn't do much, and a broody-vs-dangerous love triangle. Featuring ex- Buffy cast members, and a cameo from the GODDAMN WRITER.
