Bill Murray had the voice and feel but he acted too sober.

Murray did a very good job of portraying the actually everyday Thompson (which I am basing off of reading and old video clips of him during that time) while Depp did an excellent job of portraying the "Mythological" Thompson and amplifying it. Depp was very eccentric and over the top with his potrayal, but I think that was right on with the book, being that one of the overlaying themes was..."pushing it" and excess.

Hunter HATED the script to Where the Buffalo Roam, but he did like Bill Murrays acting. But after seeing Johnny Depp he was convinced that no one else could play him.
-
Been trying to figure that out for a long time.
-
Fear And Lothing didnt give the good enogh stuff that Buffalo did because this one actually see him shoot a fax machine
-
Depp did bring the edge but the film was reviewd as horrible no one liked on very few people did then if it were to come out now it woyuld be waaay bettter
-
Depp did do very well in Fear & Loathing in Vegas but Seriously The only one that got enough buzz was Where The Buffalo Roam because that was the first Film that was being semi biographical and talking about OScar Zeta Acosta (arl Lazlw ESQ.) and Thompson

well, depp did live with thompson for a while............

I agree with scandalouzmegz , he's got the voice and even the LOOK of Thompson down, but he's missing the edge that Depp brang to the table.
Depp was better at playing Raoul Duke. Murray was better at playing Hunter. There's a difference.
