I bought this Hoover PowerMax upright brand new back in 1989 iirc. It was Hoovers top of the line model and based on the previous Hoover Concept.. In my opinion it is the last of the quality vacuum cleaners Hoover made. Even though it contains a lot of plastic it is pretty sturdy and very heavy. Almost impossible for many woman to lift. Some of the features are the adjustable pile height, on-board tools, automatic tool conversion, self-propelled, variable electronic motor speed, power surge, chrome metal wands, and adjustable air freshener. The biggest drawback other than the weight of the machine is the extreme and I do mean extreme noise it makes. It's so loud as you can tell by the video that it makes vacuuming rather unpleasant and a chore you want to get done with quickly. No it doesn't need oiling or greasing, they were all this loud from the factory. It's biggest plus is that it is probably the absolute best carpet cleaner bar none. I've not used any other vacuum other than a Concept that equals its carpet cleaning performance.

  • why would they put a power surge on a variable speed machine? if you wanted more power, wouldn't you just slide the lever? even on high it doesn't make that much difference. between the power surge and 2 speed, I'll take the 2 speed concepts any day.

  • @Vacmasterthegreat . The PowerMax is a "Concept", just a new name. The power surge is rather useless but it does make good advertizing on the box it came it etc. .. There's a lot of "advertising" all over the actual vacuum itself.

  • i have this, does not have headlight

  • No headlight at all? I thought they all came with headlights but maybe not. As you can see mine has one light burned out

  • very nice. I have the panasonic you have in the background. Can you make a video. I would but I do not have a cammera.

  • Made a video on it. It's the one with sidebrushes

  • i wish mine was that nice

  • I have this one also, I think its pretty cool, but like the concepts I've had the lights dont last long probably becuase they vibrate so much

  • As to the date you bought this, you may want to check the serial # for clarification.

  • ya, i will make a video of it so you can see, i really hate that vacuum though it is way to big
